Trekking Tour in Himalayas
Destination: Manali - Darcha - Baralacha-La - Phirtse-La - Padam
Duration: 15 Nights & 16 Days
|
Day 1: Manali - Darcha
Road leaves Manali and climbs upto the Rohtang Pass and then winds down into the Lahaul Valley. After leaving Keylong, the road winds through extensive fields and occasional villages, along the river Bhaga. Camp set up a little before the village Darcha.
Day 2: Darcha- Patseo
Passports checked at Darcha post. Stop at Sarai valley with a small lake to the left of the road. A very good spot for rest before lunch. Arrive at Patseo via Darcha village. Night halt in inn. Reach Zingzingbar, then Mane Bar.
Day 3: Campsite- Baralacha-La-Sarchu
Reach lake Suraj Tal, finally you are on a pasture and the Baralacha-La cairn. There are two passes on Baralacha-la; to the right of the east pass is Suruf lake and if weather permits, 5000-6000 m peaks are visible. Sarchu bridge is a good campsite for overnight stay.
Day 4: Sarchu Bridge/Campsite-Lingti Ground
This is the easy part: you walk along the river bed and pass through pastures. As the valley widens, a few shepherds huts on the left can be seen. There is sand all around. Continue, and after crossing 2 canyons, camp near the spring.
Day 5: Lingti Ground- Khamerup- Phirtse-La
Today cross four canyons and after 2-3 hours cross a broad river and climb to a plateau till you reach a river, which comes from Chumickmarpho (4650M). About one hour's trek from Shepherds' huts, continue upstream, on left bank. The base camp for Phirtse-la is close by.
Day 6: Campsite- Phirtse-La
Phirtse-la (the highest pass on the whole trek) is reached in 4 hours. Follow path to the river. Another 2 hours of trek, reach campsite for night halt, around 100 m above the river with beautiful landscape. You are on the western slope.
Day 7: Campsite- Tanza
Breathtaking view of Zanskar valley in front. By passing behind a rocky bridge follow steep gorge, cross a stream. Arrive in Tanza, the meeting point of Route 2 (via Shingo-la). Tanza is a small village with a gompa in ruins.
Day 8: Tanza- Purne
Arrive at Kuru, a major village of livestock breeders. Descending for about 2 1/2 hours arrive at beautiful village, Teta. The trail continues downwards upto river. From the left bank ascend the gentle slope upto Jal. Reach Purne, for overnight camp.
Day 9: Purne-Phuktal Gompa- Purne
From Purne, reach the Phuktal monastery. The monastery is like a honeycomb, cut into a rock under a gignantic grotto. The library, prayer rooms, kitchens, abbot's chamber, chorten and the grave of Gangsem Sherap Sampo, who founded Phuktal, Likir and Ringdom gompas, are all worth-seeing.
Day 10: Purne-Ichar
Go to Char village. After 2 hours is Kaydang - a village full of poplar groves. Passing Hamuni and Surle villages, the trail is rough and difficult for horses. After crossing a large village, arrive at Ichar for overnight stay.
11th day : Ichar- Mone
Re-cross over the left bank of Tsarap river, climb before crossing a major tributary bridge, now go on descending towards Reru and after crossing a plain with wild flowers (flowering in July-August), arrive at Mone.
12th Day : Mone- Padam
From the monastery which is on a steep hill behind the town is a route leading to the left to the 6150-la Pass, the highest and most difficult pass in Zanskar. It involves crossing a glacier.
